Case Study: Ausgrid

Transforming the Future of Energy

Ausgrid Snapshot

Ausgrid is the largest electricity distributor on Australia's east coast, serving 1.8 million households and businesses and is committed to delivering safe, reliable energy while enabling the transition to a net-zero future through electrification.

As a critical digital touchpoint, Ausgrid’s website is often the first place customers turn during outages and emergency events making performance, clarity, and reliability essential.

To support growing customer demand and future ambition, Ausgrid partnered with Switch to modernise its digital ecosystem and establish a scalable foundation designed to perform under pressure and support long-term electrification goals.

Challenge

A fragmented digital ecosystem under increasing operational pressure

Ausgrid’s digital environment had become increasingly difficult to maintain, with an ageing platform, accumulated technical debt, and a portfolio spanning a corporate site and five microsites. This created mounting maintenance overhead and an inconsistent experience for Australian customers.

At the centre of the transformation was the outage map: a mission-critical service relied on by up to tens of thousands of users during major storm events. It needed to be rebuilt to deliver reliable, high-performance experiences under peak demand. Alongside this, six service reporting forms need to be simplified to reduce manual handling and improve operational efficiency across operational teams.

The opportunity was to move Ausgrid from a fragmented, reactive digital presence to a modern platform capable of supporting large scale electricity distribution across NSW and high-demand emergency scenarios.

Underpinning the transformation was a move to a scalable cloud-based platform and the use of a centralised content hub to improve governance, consistency, and content discoverability across all sites.

Solution

A unified, cloud-native platform built for operational scale

The solution was shaped by Ausgrid’s core priorities: to deliver exceptional customer experiences and enable electrification in support of a net-zero future.

Ausgrid Showcase

1. A flexible platform across six sites

We migrated Ausgrid to a modern, cloud-based CMS, where the corporate site and five microsites share a single, robust foundation. Using our accelerator, Recursion, we deployed 53+ pre-built headless components on SitecoreAI. This approach allows each site to maintain its own brand identity while drawing from the same library. Future updates are faster, duplication is reduced, and high performance is assured across the entire digital portfolio.

2. Outage map rebuilt for peak demand

The outage map is Ausgrid’s most vital community tool and must perform flawlessly during major events. We created a mobile-first, real-time experience designed to perform under extreme load conditions. Real-time cluster, pin, and polygon visualisations that respond dynamically as users zoom and pan ensure users receive accurate, real time data, ensuring the website remains a stable, trusted source of truth when the community is most in need.

3. End-to-end redesign of service reporting

Reporting a hazard should never be a point of friction for any user. After a full audit and stakeholder workshops, we rebuilt the decision logic for Ausgrid’s forms including reporting a hazard, Streetlight fault, and Loss of Supply (outage) from the ground up. By mapping each user path directly to the specific backend systems required for that request, we created a set of forms that guide users clearly. Integrated mapping allows users to pinpoint locations with GPS precision, ensuring the right information reaches the right field teams the first time.

4. Scaled content migration and digital asset management

To ensure a seamless transition from the legacy environment, we developed a structured migration approach using automated scripts and template mapping. This allowed the Ausgrid content team to work in parallel on rebuilding over 400 pages without waiting on technical development. Simultaneously, we established a centralised Digital Asset Management (DAM) system,  by building the taxonomy framework and defining metadata structures, the team were able to find, manage, and deploy brand assets with total confidence.
